Hair Loss In Women - What Are The Myths?

There's just no stopping the growing interest in hair loss in women. The condition is real and therefore a hot topic to tackle. Because so many people are talking about it though, there is also a proliferation of inaccurate information. This makes it distressing for real sufferers to look for data they can trust. Before you believe anything you read about female hair loss, there are couple of myths that need to be corrected.

#1- There is only one cause that can be blamed for the condition.

The male condition is easy to figure out. For men it all boils down to genes and hormones. This is partly true for women as well. They may lose a lot of hair once their estrogen levels go low for one reason or another. There are many other possible reasons for their hair loss though. Aside from hormonal issues, women lose strands too due to severe ailments and distressing physical and emotional situations. Anything that can severely stress the mind and body can degrade hair growth.

#2- Old women are the only ones at risk.

Women in general don't end up with wide bald areas on the scalp. What they experience is often just diffuse thinning. This is one reason why elder women may have wispy locks. It is not true however that only the old ones are prone to this condition. There are also some young individuals that experience it. These are the ones who are most likely ill with a severe disease or are experiencing hormonal issues. Those who have just given birth for instance are likely to see more falling strands than usual because of the changes in estrogen supply.

#3- Hair styling can be the reason for hair shedding.

There is some truth to too much styling damaging the quality of hair. Those who frequent salons may notice their strands growing stiffer or more prone to breakage. These however are not significant hair loss factors. The only possible styling factor that can cause a form of hair loss is tight styling. Braids, corn rolls and pony tails can uproot clumps of hair and can cause the kind of scarring that will make hair growth difficult.

#4- The condition can be completely stopped.

You can help yourself grow healthier hair if the causes of its loss are related to illness and stress. You might not be able to do much though if the cause is hormonal in nature. If you qualify for hormone replacement therapy, you might get your old locks back but there are individuals who aren't good candidates for it. You might also opt to take minoxidil but you can't expect dramatic results out of it. You can't take more than a very small amount because huge amount aren't safe for female intake. Researchers are still clearly out there looking for better solutions to the problem.

Hair loss in women is definitely a hot topic. You should be careful about the kind of information that you read though. You would want to get only the right facts.
